Hog farmers told to get livestock insurance amid ASF resurgence

PNA

CEBU CITY – The city government here has assisted 79 hog farmers in securing livestock insurance amid the resurgence of African swine fever (ASF), an official said on Thursday.

Elyn Marie Burlaos, city agriculturist, said the insurance would protect swine farmers from the negative economic impact caused by the ASF.

"We are encouraging the farmers to secure the insurance for their livestock because we don't know what will happen. At least, they can get paid if something happens to their hogs," Buralos told the media.

Farmers may avail of the livestock insurance from the City Agriculture Department.

The insurance policies issued by the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) to the 79 hog farmers cover 405 breeding and fattening hogs.

PCIC grants insurance to farmers for at least 20 heads for fattening pigs and 10 heads for breeding hogs.

She said farmers can avail of the livestock insurance worth PHP14,500 per head in case of the death of a breeding hog due to disease and calamity; and PHP10,000 per head for fattening hogs.
