Bukidnon LGU pledges P2-M budget for IP coffee farmers

PNA
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY  The city government of Valencia in Bukidnon province has pledged PHP2 million for the construction of a coffee processing facility for its indigenous community.

In a statement on Wednesday, Mayor Azucena Huervas said a coffee facility would be established for the Manggayahay Tribal Association Incorporated (Mantala Inc.), which will benefit a group of Talaandig indigenous people (IP).

At least 137 Talaandig coffee farmers are expected to gain additional income from the initiative.

"One of our most significant priorities is to assist the IP community in Valencia City. From the city government, we are with you in promoting the 'Love at First Taste' experience of Migtulod coffee to support the livelihood of the Talaandig people," she said.

The local government unit (LGU) has provided the counterpart funding as part of Mantala's partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) under a memorandum of agreement.

Through the partnership, the DOST will provide coffee processing equipment including a coffee pulper, dehydrator and coffee bean grinder machine, among others, to the IP group.

The DOST will also conduct food safety and good manufacturing process training for the beneficiaries.
