LAOAG CITY – Marginalized workers engaged in cassava farming and processing in Barangay Caraitan, Badoc, Ilocos Norte, received nearly PHP1 million in livelihood assistance from the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on Thursday.

"The selected 50 beneficiaries are composed of minimum wage earners and seasonal workers who are into cassava processing,” Janelyn Martin, DOLE Ilocos Norte chief, said in an interview.

Essential cassava processing equipment and machinery were turned over to them at the Ilocos Norte Agriculture and Fisheries Extension Center (INAFEC).

DOLE’s Kabuhayan Program empowers marginalized sectors, including self-employed individuals, low-wage earners, displaced workers, farmers, fisherfolk, women, indigenous peoples, and parents of child laborers.

“We are grateful for the continued support from DOLE and the provincial government,” the Cassava Growers and Processors Association said in a statement, vowing to enhance product quality and expand their market.

Caraitan village, known for its fertile soil, produces cassava chips in various flavors and baked goods.
