DA: Mega cold storage in Taguig to help set price floors

PNA

MANILA – Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. on Monday said the mega cold storage facility to be built in Taguig will help set “price floors” in agricultural commodities in the country.

Tiu Laurel said the facility will also help protect farmers from market prices dropping too low.

The mega cold storage, he said, can accommodate commodities such as onions and tomatoes, which are commonly affected by supply and price shifts.

“In the future, once that is complete by early 2026, kung merong bagsak ng presyo ng mga kamatis by that time, pwede nang bumili, mag-intervene ang FTI (Food Terminal Incorporated) to buy na hindi ganun kababa (if there’s a price drop in tomatoes by that time, they can buy. The FTI can intervene at a level that is not that low),” Tiu Laurel said in a media interview.

“(It can be used) to store and sell at a later date to stabilize prices at hindi rin masyado maapektuhan ang farmers sa pagbagsak ng presyo (and the farmers will not be affected too much by the price drop),” he added.

Tiu Laurel said the Taguig mega cold storage facility will undergo bidding this year, with a target completion eyed in 2026.

The FTI can store around 5,000 metric tons of agricultural commodities in the facility.
