MALASIQUI, Pangasinan – Around 800 farmers in Barangays Buenlag and Banaoang in Calasiao will benefit from the 660-meter irrigation lateral canal worth PHP15 million constructed through the National Irrigation Administration (NIA).

In a statement Tuesday, NIA Ilocos Region acting regional manager Geffrey Catulin said the structure would enable water to flow faster and lessen water seepage compared to when the canal was only made of earth.

The irrigation can supply water to around 600 hectares of land in the two villages, he said.
“We will continue to provide irrigation canal projects for our farmers,” Catulin said, adding that NIA has allocated PHP201 million for Pangasinan this year.

Aside from the construction of irrigation canals, NIA also provides solar-powered pumps and water pumps, as well as spearheads the construction of deep wells.

NIA Pangasinan division manager John Molano said farmers would be able to plant rice with sufficient water supply through the water irrigation canal.
