DAVAO CITY – A newly completed PHP177 million farm-to-market road (FMR) in Magsaysay, Davao del Sur, is expected to benefit approximately 6,658 residents, the Department of Agriculture in Davao Region (DA-11) announced Tuesday.
The 8.81-kilometer FMR in Barangay Glamang, funded under the I-BUILD Component of the Philippine Rural Development Project (PRDP), aims to provide easier market access for farmers and improve the quality of their produce by reducing post-harvest losses and travel time.
DA-11 Regional Director Macario Bong D. Gonzaga, who also serves as the PRDP Mindanao project director, highlighted the project’s impact on the region’s agricultural landscape.
“It is important to recognize the contribution and efforts of the local government units (LGUs) in completing this subproject. For years, Magsaysay has been an active partner of DA and PRDP in ensuring farmers benefit from government interventions,” Gonzaga said in a statement.
The FMR, which traverses agricultural areas across 22 barangays in Magsaysay, was funded through a collaboration between the PRDP-Regional Project Coordination Office 11 (PRDP-RPCO 11), the World Bank, the European Union, and the Magsaysay LGU.
Floracel Cansing, a resident of Barangay Glamang, recalled the challenges of transporting produce before the road was paved.
“During the rainy season, the road transformed into a river. We could not transport our produce to the market as vehicles could not pass, which often led to accidents,” she said.
With the newly paved road, Cansing said farmers can now transport their produce to nearby communities more efficiently.
