Davao Durian Goes Global: Region Nets USD6.4 Million at China Import Expo

DAVAO CITY — The Davao Region proudly showcased Filipino agricultural excellence on the global stage after recording USD6.4 million in export sales at the ongoing 8th China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai, according to the Department of Agriculture–Region XI (DA-11) on Friday.

DA-11 Regional Director Macario Gonzaga announced the signing of a landmark sales contract between Fruta Asiatica Export and Agri Trading and Weihai Pure Fruit Food Technology Co., Ltd., covering the shipment of 2,000 metric tons of fresh durian from Davao.

“This demonstrates how our local producers can thrive in the global arena when given the right market linkages and institutional support,” Gonzaga said, emphasizing the significance of strong public-private collaboration in elevating Mindanao’s agricultural exports.

Fruta Asiatica, a homegrown exporter known for its premium durian and banana products, has been actively trading across China, Korea, and the United States, further solidifying Davao’s position as a top producer of high-quality tropical fruits.

Gonzaga hailed the deal as a milestone for the durian industry, reinforcing the Department’s commitment to empower farmers and connect agribusinesses to global buyers.

“DA will continue to bridge opportunities that empower our farmers and strengthen the competitiveness of Mindanao’s agri-products,” he added.

A total of 10 exhibitors from the Davao Region joined the six-day expo, promoting the richness, diversity, and export readiness of Mindanao’s agri-commodities. Participants included Maylong Enterprises Corp., Engseng Food Products, Avante Agri Products Phils. Inc., Ed-Mar Agricultural Ventures Co. Ltd., Gold Standards Farms Inc., VJT Enterprises, Xiang Tai Fruits and Vegetables Corporation, BJM-Plouteo Agricultural Export Trading, and Ahya Coco Organic Food.

The local durian export industry gained global traction in April 2023 when Davao shipped its first 18 metric tons of durian to China, featuring premium varieties like Puyat, D-101, Cob, and Duyaya.

This latest international breakthrough cements Davao’s reputation as the “Durian Capital of the Philippines”, symbolizing how Filipino agripreneurs can thrive globally through innovation, quality, and sustainability.
