BUTUAN CITY – In a continuing effort to strengthen agricultural productivity and food security in the Caraga Region, the Department of Agriculture–Region 13 (DA-13) has distributed a total of 980 bags of fertilizers to 268 rice farmers in Carrascal, Surigao del Sur.
The delivery, consisting of 490 bags of complete fertilizer and 490 bags of ammonium sulphate, was conducted on Tuesday to benefit rice-producing barangays including Adlay, Gamuton, Bacolod, Panikian, and Tag-anito.
According to DA-13, the initiative is part of the agency’s program to boost rice yield, enhance soil fertility, and promote climate-resilient farming practices among local farmers.
“This initiative seeks to boost rice productivity, enrich soil fertility, and strengthen the resilience of local farmers,” the agency stated on Wednesday.
One of the beneficiaries, Marilyn Sugian from Barangay Panikian, shared that the fertilizers will play a key role in her upcoming planting season.
“I received one sack and 25 kilos of complete fertilizer and another one sack and 25 kilos of sulfate. These will be applied during planting from the last week of November to the first week of December,” Sugian said.
She added that the free fertilizers will help farmers save over ₱2,000 in input costs — a significant relief amid rising agricultural expenses.
“We are thankful to the government, through the DA, for this support. This is a big help to us,” Sugian said.
The fertilizer support is one of DA-13’s key interventions to ensure sufficient rice production and uplift the livelihood of farming communities across Surigao del Sur.
