BATANES, Philippines — The Department of Agriculture (DA) has officially proclaimed Batanes as an “Organic Farming Practitioner Province,” recognizing the island’s pristine, chemical-free farmlands and its commitment to preserving traditional, sustainable agriculture.
Agriculture Secretary
Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. signed the administrative order on October 8,
declaring Batanes as “organic by default,” a historic milestone that
strengthens the province’s position as both a leader in organic agriculture and
a rising agro-tourism destination in the country.
A Province Naturally Rooted in Organic Tradition
Nestled at the northernmost tip of the Philippines, Batanes has long practiced organic farming by virtue of its geographic isolation and deep-rooted Ivatan farming traditions. Its 13,208.90 hectares of farmland — devoted to crops and livestock — remain untouched by synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, ensuring that its produce remains as pure as its natural landscapes.
The province’s 4,126 farmers and 35
agricultural cooperatives are fully engaged in sustainable and organic
agriculture, guided by local ordinances that align with the Organic Agriculture
Act of 2010 (RA 10068).
“This designation affirms Batanes’ unwavering commitment to sustainable farming that ensures food security, protects the environment, and empowers local communities,” Secretary Laurel said.
“It also opens doors for greater
technical, financial, and market support that will strengthen Batanes’ role as
a model for the rest of the country.”
Homegrown Crops with Global Appeal
Known for its garlic, onions, sweet potatoes, and beef cattle, Batanes’ organic products are now commanding premium prices in domestic markets. The growing demand is inspiring more farmers to adopt organic methods, reinforcing the province’s agricultural resilience and food sufficiency.
Projects such as the Naidi Multi-Commodity Project and the Tukon Agro-Tourism Site serve as demonstration hubs for organic farming, integrating education, sustainability, and community participation.
Where Agriculture Meets Tourism
Batanes is also embracing a future where organic farming fuels tourism. With sites like the Batanes Resort Agro-Tourism Project, visitors can immerse themselves in eco-friendly farm experiences, savor local harvests, and engage with Ivatan culture — all while supporting the province’s sustainable development goals.
A National Model for Sustainable Agriculture
The DA’s declaration of Batanes as an “Organic by Default Province” sets a precedent for other regions, reaffirming the government’s commitment to advancing food safety, environmental stewardship, and rural prosperity.
As Secretary Laurel noted, Batanes stands as a living testament to the harmony between people, nature, and productivity — where farming is not just a livelihood, but a way of life rooted in care for the land and future generations.
