Gov’t Agencies, Tanduay Volunteers Collect 191 Kg Waste in Manila Bay Cleanup

MANILA – Government workers and private sector volunteers joined hands for the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) Day 2025, with Tanduay Distillers, Inc. (TDI) among those answering the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ (DENR) call for action.

On Sept. 20, TDI employee-volunteers took part in the cleanup drive at the Manila Bay Dolomite Beach, collecting 191.21 kilograms of waste from the shoreline.

“By participating in the ICC, we reinforced our company-wide commitment to sustainable and responsible business practices,” said Francheska Cruz, Tanduay’s Group Safety, Environment and Risk Management officer.

TDI staff highlighted that the effort is part of the company’s long-running corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs, which also include tree-planting and environmental activities across its plants in Laguna, Misamis Oriental, and Negros Occidental.

The DENR reported that this year’s ICC, themed “Clean Seas Against the Climate Crisis,” mobilized around 86,000 volunteers nationwide across 298 sites, who collected a combined 460,000 kilograms of waste. In Metro Manila alone, 25,000 participants joined activities at Baseco Lagoon, Pasig River, Las Piñas–Parañaque Wetland Park, Tullahan River, and other coastal areas.

The Department of Foreign Affairs - Maritime and Ocean Affairs Office also joined the cleanup, coinciding with the 125th Philippine Civil Service Anniversary.

“Marine debris, particularly plastics, threatens marine life, disrupts ecosystems, and endangers the livelihoods of coastal communities,” the DENR said. “The ICC champions sustainable practices and underscores our shared responsibility as stewards of the environment.”
