OCD Accelerates Aid Delivery to Families Affected by Typhoons Nando and Opong

MANILA, PHILIPPINES – The Philippine government is moving swiftly to deliver essential non-food aid to families affected by tropical cyclones Nando and Opong, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) reported Saturday.

As of Saturday, the OCD, in coordination with the Bureau of Fire Protection, has dispatched 1,500 shelter repair kits, 500 tarpaulin sheets, and 200 family tents to communities in Ilocos and Cagayan Valley.

“This proactive effort underscores our commitment to support communities in the aftermath of recent storms while strengthening readiness for any further weather disturbances,” the OCD said in a statement.

The combined effects of tropical cyclones Mirasol, Nando, and Opong have affected over 563,000 families nationwide. According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), at least 23,336 families, or 81,428 individuals, are currently sheltered in 1,482 evacuation centers, while 17,098 families remain displaced at home.

OCD spokesperson Junie Castillo said relief operations are focused on the hardest-hit provinces of Masbate, Romblon, Eastern Samar, and Oriental and Occidental Mindoro. “In Mimaropa, we are still assessing the full impact, as the typhoon just passed,” Castillo said. He also noted communication challenges due to intermittent signals in affected areas.

The NDRRMC confirmed 19 fatalities across the Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Bicol Region, and Eastern Visayas. Agriculture production losses are estimated at over 78,000 metric tons, amounting to approximately PHP914.8 million.

A total of 7,490 passengers were stranded across eight regions, including Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, Negros Island Region, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, and Caraga. All airports nationwide remain operational.
