DA Releases P10.7-M Support for Bislig Farmers’ Cooperatives

BUTUAN CITY – Two farmers’ cooperatives in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur, have received a combined ₱10.7 million in livelihood and agricultural support from the Department of Agriculture in Caraga (DA-13), boosting local production and opening new market opportunities.

The Western Visayas Agro Industrial Cooperative (WEVAICO) was awarded ₱8.71 million worth of machinery through the DA’s Corn Program, including a soybean sorter, a hauling truck, and a multi-commodity thresher. Cooperative chairperson Nelita Sabangan said the equipment will allow their members to scale up soybean production and expand their reach to markets outside the province.

“The machinery and equipment will help us improve our soybean production and reach more markets not only in Surigao del Sur but also in neighboring provinces,” Sabangan said.

Meanwhile, the Bislig City Organic Agriculture Cooperative (BISCOACO) received ₱2 million under the Livestock Economic Enterprise Development (LEED) program for a Ready-to-Lay Chicken Module project. The package includes 1,000 chickens, housing, feeds, and veterinary supplies.

BISCOACO chairperson Eduardo Paira said the project will ensure a steady supply of eggs for Bislig and nearby towns while generating additional income for members.

“This project will also help our members as we plan to bring our egg products to the different markets in the city,” Paira noted.

According to DA-13, the interventions form part of its continuing push to empower rural cooperatives and promote sustainable agriculture across Surigao del Sur.
