DEL CARMEN, Siargao Island – What started as a small group of daycare mothers pooling ₱50 a week has blossomed into a movement of empowerment, resilience, and shared success for women in Barangay Bitoon, Del Carmen, Siargao.
Founded by daycare teacher Meralyn Tesiorna, the Women’s Association of Brgy. Bitoon (WABB) began as a simple “paluwagan” among 20 mothers. Today, it has grown to over 50 members who not only support each other in times of need but also drive community initiatives that strengthen both families and livelihoods.
“Hindi kami lumalapit sa gobyerno noong una. Sabi ko, kahit tag-₱50 lang, simulan natin (We didn’t ask the government for help at first. I said, even if it’s just ₱50 each, let’s start),” Tesiorna recalled.
Through their pooled funds, the group established a social safety net—helping members cover medical expenses, food, schooling, and even bigger family milestones like weddings and home improvements.
Their resourcefulness led them to start a community garden on idle land lent by a member. Soon, the women were harvesting vegetables like okra, pumpkin, and bottle gourd, not only providing food security but also selling produce to resorts and businesses, transforming them into recognized local suppliers.
Beyond financial gains, Tesiorna said the group’s biggest achievement is giving women confidence and dignity. “Karamihan sa mga nanay dito, walang trabaho… Ngayon, na-empower na ang mga nanay (Most of the mothers here were unemployed… Now, the mothers are empowered),” she said.
Government support eventually followed. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) extended livelihood cash aid worth ₱7,700 per member, while the Department of Agriculture (DA) provided seeds and technical training. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is also eyeing WABB’s inclusion in its Project Transform, which links communities with partners for resilience, sustainability, and livelihood opportunities.
From a humble weekly contribution, the Siargao mothers have built more than savings—they have cultivated a community of strength and pride, proving that even small steps can lead to lasting change.
