BUTUAN CITY – Farmers in Tago, Surigao del Sur are reaping income from soybean production, thanks to government interventions that boosted their harvest and market access.
The Meme Agricultural Farmers Association (MAGFA) sold 7,574 kilos of soybeans worth ₱215,774 directly to a buyer from Davao City over the weekend.
MAGFA is among several soybean farmers in the province that received assistance this year from the Department of Agriculture in Caraga Region (DA-13), which provided seeds, fertilizers, and post-harvest facilities. These included a ₱500,000 soybean sorter, a ₱600,000 soybean thresher, and a ₱400,000 solar dryer.
“With these interventions, we aim to increase soybean production and improve farmers’ incomes,” said Claire Ilagan, soybean focal person of DA-13.
DA-13 also facilitated market linkages to help farmers secure buyers and maximize earnings. “Direct marketing allows our soybean farmers to gain higher returns by delivering quality produce directly to the market,” said Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Division chief Lynn Pareñas.
The agency continues to promote soybean farming as a sustainable enterprise and an additional source of livelihood in Caraga.
