PILI, Camarines Sur, Philippines— Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. and Camarines Sur Governor Luis Raymund Villafuerte inspected on Saturday the nearly completed ₱500-million cold storage facility, a flagship Department of Agriculture (DA) project designed to strengthen food security, generate jobs, and uplift farmers’ incomes in Bicol and neighboring regions.
Slated to open this December, the mega facility will store a wide range of agricultural commodities including vegetables, meat, chicken, and fish. It will feature six refrigerated warehouses with a combined capacity of over 1,300 tons, a solar power system to reduce energy costs, a blast freezer, and a processing and packing hub to support value-added services for farmers.
“This project is aligned with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s vision of transforming farmers into agri-preneurs,” Tiu Laurel said. “It will enable farmers to extend the shelf life of their harvests, minimize spoilage, and tap into bigger markets.”
Governor Villafuerte praised the initiative as a “game-changer” for local agriculture. “This is an investment in our farmers—the lifeblood of our country—helping them diversify, add value to their produce, and ultimately earn more,” he said.
The CamSur facility is part of a nationwide DA-led network of mega and modular cold storage complexes. Upcoming sites include Taguig City, Cabanatuan City, Occidental Mindoro, and Isabela, with over 100 modular units also set for deployment to farming communities nationwide.
“This is how we build a food-secure and farmer-empowered Philippines,” Tiu Laurel emphasized.
